“Nickel Free” Jewelry
After contemplating getting my ears pierced for a second time I started to think about jewelry. The problem that I ran into is that as a child (and growing up) I had a pair of 24K studs in my ears for the better part of 10 years. So like any other child I wanted to give other earrings a go, being lucky that my uncle was a jeweler I got another pair of gold earrings. So as I got older nearing the end of highschool I chose a different pair of earrings. Well… to my surprise these silver earrings cause my ears to get infected within a few hours of having them in.
Later on in life I found that not only was I allergic to earrings but to the buttons on my jeans as well. I started to search why I was getting these skin infections on my belly and why my ears would get all red. Turns out it was an allergy to nickel. It’s only been recently that they’ve started making “Nickel Free” earrings etc.. But as we all know not all “nickel free” jewelry is created equal.
I bought a few pairs of “Nickel Free” earrings from Target today and will see how they fare the test of a few days in my ears. So far they’ve been in for about 2 hours and I don’t see any redness or irritation. My ears feel a little sore, but it’s probably because I haven’t worn any earrings in 10 years. So we’ll see!
