Doctor, Doctor…Please shut it.
So, took the baby to the doctor last week. He lost 3oz since the last visit he had (2 weeks before). Which could be a normal fluctuation based on whatever. But she made a huge deal about the fact that he had a loss versus a gain. But, after I talked to my husband, at his 9 month checkup they weighed him fully clothed WITH his heavy ass cloth diaper on his butt. When I took him last week they weighed him butt ass naked. So, yea of course there’s a difference. (really annoyed with that). Then, the first thing she asks, “How much are you pumping?” as if that is the problem. Which it isn’t, I tell her while I’m at work, about 8-9 hours I now pump about 10-12oz which is about right for him. Where before it was 14-16 oz at the peak of his nursing. She asked how much was he drinking while I was away at work. He’s been drinking about 5oz while I’m away. Then she said “I know you’re doing your best, but we need to get him to drink, have you tried formula?” I looked at her deadpan and said, “You misunderstand, I have SEVEN GALLONS of frozen breast-milk in my freezer and at my mothers freezer, the problem is not supply, it’s the fact that he hates the bottle, and won’t drink anything BUT water from his sippy cup, and he keeps puking” Then she went on to say that we had to increase his calories somehow, and kept trying to push formula on my now 10 month breastfeeding child that has only known breast-milk his entire life. I know how that formula crap tastes, he’s not gonna like it and it’s not going to fix the issue that he won’t drink from a bottle. So blah blah blah, basically I left the office feeling defeated and like a failure. (as per the usual) I cried the whole way home from the doctors office because of how much of a piece of crap she(the doctor) made me feel like. She basically told to feed him all these things I remember being told he was not ready for and in my opinion nutritionally vacant. So I turn to my sister and tell her all these things, and she says “You can try formula but he probably won’t take it, and did she give you specific amounts on that food, and for how long?” Nope.
Also, a side complaint. Why are so many pediatricians not pro-breastfeeding? Why do they want you to wean as soon as they’re 1yr? Why?! Argh, whatever, I’m gonna do what I want.
Back to the story:
My sister is a dietitian that specializes in infant and child nutrition. She says that too often, doctors will tell a parent their child is underweight or overweight and won’t give them accurate feeding or nutrition advice, and rather than referring them to a nutritionist/dietitian, they’ll give them half-assed information with little to no research. With the help of my sister we’ve come up with a plan to get more calories into my tiny munchkin and not feed him a bunch of crap that could lead to other issues. We go back for another weight check after Christmas, I hope he gains enough to be back up to his regular percentile. For now, he’s happy and growing. I’m also hoping that he gives up his bottle strike, so I can stop feeling like I’m pumping for nothing.
